Romanian extruder changes pipe diameters on the fly
Published: February 15th, 2013
A Romanian pipe extruder has been producing single-, double- and three-layer polyethylene (PE) drinking water pipes in diameters ranging between 250 and 450 mm in a fully automated fashion with shift-on-the-fly size changes via a QuickSwitch line from KraussMaffei Berstorff.
S.C. Valrom Industrie S.R.L. (Bucharest) utilize single-screw extruders from KraussMaffei Berstorff's 36D series, which includes a newly designed KM-3L RKW 75 QS pipe head, suction belt and calibration basket with a QuickSwitch design.
Michael Hofhus, head of the pipe extrusion product group at KraussMaffei Berstorff, said in a release that the QuickSwitch feature increases an extruder's competitiveness since the producer can react quickly, offer short delivery times and rapidly fulfill urgent orders.
S.C. Valrom Industrie S.R.L. is part of Italy's Valsir Group (Vestone), which is one of the region's largest polyolefin processors, supplying a wide range of products for infrastructural applications such as pipes for sanitary installations and heating systems, drinking water pipes, wastewater pipes and gas pipes.
In addition to newest machine, it has four other QuickSwitch lines in operation at the Bucharest plant. These lines cover all currently available diameter ranges, i.e. 25 to 63 mm, 75 to 160 mm and 160 to 250 mm. The subsidiary S.C. Valrom Ukraine S.R.L. in Vinnytsya (Ukraine) also operates a QuickSwitch line for the diameter range between 75 and 160 mm.
