Tammaron Technologies

Tammaron Technologies manufactures an HDPE bonding agent called Tam Tech which might do the trick for you. Check out the specs on their website. They also do specialty products so if the Tam Tech adhesive doesn't work for you per has you could contact them directly for a special mix?

came across your link as a result of my visiting a National Geographic - Intelligent Travel - blog. I spent some time looking through your prints of the state mottos. It felt good to reflect on where I have been in my life, and I learned some interesting info. You have provided a wonderful example of using technology to combine creativity, skill, intelligence, and fun! Thanks again for sharing.

You can modify the surface by

You can modify the surface by flame or corona treatment to help. Santoprene grades usually contain about 40% PP, which is also difficult to bond and not that compatible (in the melt) with HDPE, so platten welding will not be that good. Some high temperature hot melt adhesives will have compatiblity with both and are an option. Emabond will do a good job for a high volume application but require extensive development and tooling which make it uneconomical for smaller volume runs. If you coroma treat the HDPE free books, you might be able to use a cynoacrylate from Loctite.

I may have posted this twice. If so please forgive the duplicate note. Akron Coatings and Adhesives has recently developed a line of adhesives designed specifically to bond Santoprene to various surfaces. These adhesives do not require any primer and many are water-based for easy clean up.

We were able to finally bond HDPE to Santoprene using a loctite primer and then a loctite glue.. this seems to give us a really strong bond. Thank you to all those replied.

RE: Bonding Santoprene to HDPE

HDPE is a low energy material. Therefore glues that do not wet the surface will have difficulty bonding. You can modify the surface by flame or corona treatment to help. Santoprene grades usually contain about 40% PP, which is also difficult to bond and not that compatible (in the melt) with HDPE, so platten welding will not be that good. All bets are off on finding a good way to bond silicone to HDPE.

If PE doesn't bond well, why are so many hot melt glue guns sold?

RE: Bonding Santoprene to HDPE

Santoprene is a poly pro based material. Since PP&PE are olefenic resins you will get a natural thermo-bond between the two. Have done it many times when I was with AES/Monsanto in the process lab with very good success rate.

RE: Bonding Santoprene to HDPE

according to the bonding charts I have, PE does not bond very good to anything. Surprising since I would have thought the same as the first reply. You could contact Santoprene or Multibase which has a silicone based TPV. Both of them should be able to help you select a bondable product if they have one.

RE: Bonding Santoprene to HDPE

Santoprene is EPDM rubber in a PP matrix. I would think that using HDPE you can acheive a natural thermo bond between the two. Check The Santoprene website(www.santoprene.com) Look for the bonding or injection molding guide. I know there are several technical papers within their site that should help you. What grade of Santoprene are you using and what is the actual melt temperature? Make sure you let your HDPE parts set for 24 hours prior to molding the Santoprene on them or you will get very little bonding. Parts must be free of grease oil and contaminates. You may have to pre-heat inserts prior to overmolding to enhance bonding.
