Has anyone had any trouble with the pump proportional valves heating up and failing on Engel hydraulic injection molding machines?

Since 1997 we have run the Bosch (Moog) "smart pump".
Early on we found that the ISO vis. grade 68 recommended by Engel was helping to add additional heat to the system. Engel later recommended a switch to 46 grade oil which helped but didn't remove enough heat to save the punp o-rings from getting brittle.
A change from Buna to Viton o-rings made a huge difference.
A couple of suggestions I recommend would be to make sure you don't leave the machine pump running over 15 minutes without some type of movement requiring hyd. oil pressure or flow. Your pump "flushing" program is supposed to help diminish the heat but I would check the settings anyway.
Your oil should run in the range from 29c. to 46c. with a set point of 38c.per Bosch chart on RKP pumps. It is important to not change this number to get a machine up and running quicker since the oil does spill over the s10 valve during warm up. (You might need to change the coils on the small s10 valve more but it's less of a price than other components.
One last thing you might want to check is the idle pressure of the pump. Engel calls for 20 bar and Moog 30, I have found the lower pressure tends to let the stroke ring slip.

This Engel Machine has a great contribution to my essay writing work. Cheers to the people who created this machine. Sometimes we need to pay tribute to the makers or to those who are involved in this project.

and the cooling fan filters are cleaned once a week.
The main problem was that there was only two small cooling fans mounted on the pump side of the machine.
We removed the small fans and installed much larger ones, this helped the problem considerably, but we still have the proportional valves fail on us once in a while. the fans that were origanly mounted in the cabinets took 24 hours to change out the air in that space. We installed two 1100 cfm fans, this helped alot. We spoke with rexroth about the valve problems and the knew right away that Engel has a history of very high temps in the pump compartments.

Brent, last company used a very high dollar filtration cart. All machines were ordered with the connections for the cart, installed by Engel. The cart was an electrostatic filter system. Truth be told, we only had one bad valve on a machine but it appeared to be a fluke!? This same valve failed two times, and was part of the safety circuit on the clamp. Filtroils are great, had some JSW's with them factory installed. My current and last companies use ONLY Mobil hydraulic oil. Keeps the oil related issues away! Rick.

Rick,
Do you use Filtroil By-Pass filters on your Engels? I do and love them.

Your problem is more than
Your problem is more than likely two fold. 1) What is the oil temperature set point? 40°C (104°F)IS THE CORRECT ANSWER! If you run hotter, the electronics will become toast as they are located directly on the PUMP housing. You probably have the enclosures that keep the sound low in the plant. Excess heat of the oil is a NO NO! 2) Poor cooling, excessive tower temp/ low cooling volume through machine heat exchanger is causing excessive oil temps. Remember, the electronics are mounted on the pump! Now, excessive cabinet temps won't help either. The cooling fans/filters must be cleaned EVERY month! If I am off base here, give me the answers and I'll find the root cause. I love Engel machines.....But I can't tolerate abuse of them!!!! Rick.
All of our engel molding
All of our engel molding machines have rexroth proportional valves mounted to the side of the pumps this controls pressure and speed for these pumps. They are called proportional valves on the screen and in the print. Usually pump # 1, 1.2 and 3 rund clamp and inject pressure and pump 2 runs eject pressure. Does this help you any?
What is the Model? Do you
What is the Model?
Do you have a Rexroth or Bosch Variable displacement pump?
Do you have a fixed output pump?
By "pump proportional valves" what do you mean. Do you refer to the K" valve which is a proportional pressure control valve or a proportional flow (Y valve) control valve, or a Moog valve?
What are the symptoms of the failure?
What kind of maintenance do you do? Do you abuse your Engels? Watch out if you answer yes, Rick Batey will hunt you down, and he is well armed!
How often has this happened?
Have you contacted Engel?
I haven't ever had this happen ( hope I don't put a hex on them) to our Engel presses. We run quick cycles for years and no problems. I do treat them with TLC though
Where are you located?
Give us some more info
Keep molding!
