Am about to lay down a new Mold, what questions should I be asking the Molding company about their Molding machine and factory set-up apart from just receiving a generic IM spec with tie-bar spacing etc.. Am thinking along the lines of plant cooling temps, flow capacity, barrel dia etc etc... Any help be great.

You should ask detailed

You should ask detailed information about the injection machine especially the mold installation plate sizes, sprue type, tonnages etc. It will be more better if you can ask the molding company to send you the drawings of the injection machine.

DSM - the lifetime volume of

DSM - the lifetime volume of the part divided by the years the product will be in the market will give you the annualized volume. This will dictate the number of cavities. Add to it the runner's volume and you get the shot size. Ideally this will be between 20-80% of the machine's shot capacity and therefore define the ideal machine you'd want it in.

The philosophy of cooling is to try to put the flow of the Amazon River through the mold. More cooling lines are better than less. However, you can't really specify the flow. That's up to the molder depending on how he hooks up the water.

A good set of tooling specifications are mandatory - finish, replacement parts, sources for common parts - ejector pins, mold bases and such, type of steel, built to last xxx, xxx, xxx closures etc. Avoid phrases like "Or Equivalent" - there is no equivalent to H-13 steel, there are steels similar but not equivalent.

It's easy to over-specify a mold. But you're dealing with two different companies - the mold builder and the molder.

If you're not molding parts yourself, work though your molder so that the mold can be built specifically to work with his equipment.
