The part cost application is quite extensive and comprehensive. You will find them very useful to assist most of your injection molding projects' estimation and engineering.

If no experience in plastic and mold,it's impossible to quote exactually!
WE have a caulation form,you just need to input the moldbase size,core and cavity size,and select a complex factor,material,then the form can caculate the mold price automatic.Anyway,you should know the mold also!if you never know about the mold,you can't how to input also!

type of used resin
any specialities for part surface
wall thickness
volume of the part
projected surface of the part (calculation of needed clampforce)

Supposed you an expert in preparing quotation for plastic parts.
I'm new in the industry. I have difficulty in estimating the runner weight most of the time. How do I get it right?

The part quote procedure as follow:
1. Part weight, and runner weight, and material price, then you can get the material cost
2. cavity no, and cycle time, and machine tonnage, and machine rate, then you can get the info of machine cost
3. Based on above info, you also should consider the scrap rate. Transparent, or white color parts are easily have dark spots on them. Also, depends on quality specification.
4. Machine size selection:
a. clamping force. You can calculate by moldflow software or by hand. The simple rule is average injection pressure * projection area. Like PC you can use 0.5 ton/cm2 x area. Different material, different thickness, different flow length, even geometry will influence the pressure distribution. Moldflow can get good estimation. If you dont have the software, you need experence to get precise estimation.
b. shot weight: Shot weight should 20%~80% of machine shot weight
c. Tie bar distance: Your tool should be available put into the machine.
If you considerate about second operation, then it will be another story.

I also develop a software package myself. To quote the cost of tool is based on below procedure:
1. part dimension, and layout
2. accroding 1, you can select the core/cavity size
3. accroding 2, you can select moldbase size, and get moldbase cost
4. Once you sepecify the core/cavity material. Plus the step 2 info, you can get the info of core, cavity cost
5. Plus some accosiated parts cost.
6. Caluculate the machining cost. Mainly CNC, and wirecut cost
7. Calculate the slide/lifter/insert cost
8. Calculate the design cost/mold fitting cost/administration cost/mold trial cost
9. add profit percentage
10. You can have the precise quote.
What I mentioned above looks easy. But you need to collect a lot of info, then you can quote. Like the CNC required machining hour estimation, and hourly rate of CNC machine... etc.

Bill promised on this topic, that maybe after a few weeks he may come out with a shareware, muld quoting program I checked his website and not found. I was just asking if it is ready. Getting started in quotations is tough. There are some outstandingly expensive programs you can buy $5,000 - 15,000. There are also some free(?) quick and dirty part/mold quoting programs. Google "Mold Quoting Programs" and you'll come up with them. Keep in mind because they are free the accuracy you want is worth the price.

There are also some 'subscription' quoting services. You pay $/month (like a porn site) and send in your information and they give you answers. Naturally because you are sending to a molder/mold maker you'll get a quote from them.

if you go to http://www.cbrewer.com/ that is the site for C Brewer Inc in Anahiem CA. They have a page in their site where you give information and they'll quote it for free.

In a few weeks (hopefully) I'll have a part / mold quoting program that is shareware on my site. 2 weeks for free then you have to purchase it for $400. Best price in the business. Right now I'm kicking the bugs out of it. e-mail me with your e-mail address and I'll put you on the mailing for the newsletter that will announce its availability.

Get a process guide for the material involved. That will get you started. Usually they can give a basic cycle time based on wall thickness of the part.
