We have been using a PC plastic injection molded part from a supplier for a long time, and it looks great - glossy and deep black, but the cost is

Guys,
Do you have idea whats the difference of using PC,ABS or cycoloy which combination of PC/ABS?
Has anyone here considered
Has anyone here considered getting supplies from Mainland instead? Tom, how has the suggestions worked for you so far?
The PC can generate more
The PC can generate more gloss if you update drivers windows and maybe get the latest version of the software.
RE: PC vs ABS nightmares
I know that the shrink is radically different, but have you considered an Acetal? Cheaper than PC. It can achieve a nice gloss. But most of all, very resistant to scratches from guitar picks.
Bass guitar for me. Like Brent, I think I'll keep my day job, too!
RE: PC vs ABS nightmares
One amusing case,i review my photos saved of ABS part, none is glossy. This is frist time i see the photo in this forum, and in China we post the part, tool, equip photos in forum always.I am confused by this question now.Who can tell me why???
RE: PC vs ABS nightmares
Higher mold temps (water) and melt temps will increase the gloss of the part. Excessive heat can cause premature failure of the part by damaging the polymer chains. Exactly what was the PC parts failure? I would have expected it to exceed your requirments. The failures could have been due to poor processing or tooling issues. No guitars, just an old drum set?! Rick.
RE: PC vs ABS nightmares
Approximately what temperature were you experiencing failure of the PC part at?
B.
RE: PC vs ABS nightmares
It looks that your ABS samples were made of fire-grade resin, please have a try with general ABS, and ask the molder to polish the steel as a high grade, nearly mirror.
I think you will get a better result soon.

Oh,
Technology is hitting the guitar industry too. "Robotic servo" tuners on Gibsons and, I think Peavy has USB hookups to a PC for effects. Then there are Nano coated strings.!

Toner,
I used to send my wife on an all expense paid trip to Guatemala to see her mother. When she got back, I'd have a new guitar. She soon got wise to my strategy, Yes, guitars are addictive, even for lousy players like me!
My 1st Les Paul, a '57 Gibson gold top, and my J45 each were worth more than the cars I drove for many years. People used to tell me that "you can't drive your guitar to work" Yea but I traded my prep school graduation rifle for that J45, and it went with me all over the world, from Montana during college days to Mexico and Guatemala, where the case didn't stand up to a taxi trunk lid and got a crack in the back. Two top luthiers won't fix it, since it is so old, that they don't want to risk changing the sound.
Hey, please let us know how the resin works out for you.

RE: PC vs ABS nightmares
Hi Brent,
Excactly the solution I was looking for - I had found some sources of high-gloss ABS, but I want continuity in our products so as close to the original part appearance as possible. I will search for local suppliers of the plastics you mentioned. The part is very light so cost is not the driving factor.
My Number 1 is a Les Paul Historic Burst, but I have too many guitars to count at the moment - we have at least one demo instrument for each of our pickup models, and a few more personal guitars, and some more to R&D new models (like a new Epi Casino for dog-ear P90 pickups). It never seems to end...If you aren't in the music business then one Les Paul, one Tele and an Acoustic should just about cover all the bases, but guitars are just too addictive.
RE: PC vs ABS nightmares
Should. if not try PC/ABS like Bayblend or Cycloly, though don't know if they are cheaper than straight PC>
What kind of guitar do you play? I got Les Paul, Gibson J45 and a couple of Epiphones.
I play lousier than I mold, so I still try to mold.
