plating for optical finish

Could somebody recommend a plating to protect optically polished core from scratches and corrosion? The core is made out of Stavax. The parts are molded from either polystyrene or PET. Will the electroless nickel work for this application?

I thought Stavax was already somewhat hard and provided some corrosion resistance ????
What is the hardness of your core?
I have had extremely good luck with 'Polyond'
It's a great corrosion and release plating and will go into waterlines as well. It's a nickel teflon plating but unlike most. A special process in which the teflon is applied and baked. Hardness up to 62 Rc .
It replicates the surface finish of your steel and can be stripped with outstanding results

PS: If you are considering a chrome plate or chrome variation, you might want to electroless nickel the steel first in case you ever need to strip the chrome. The same acid used to strip chrome also eats steel. I learned this trick the hard way.

Thanks for your replies. I used Bekaert DLN plating before. That is a good stuff, with one downside though. If it does not come out right, then stripping completely ruins the optical finish. The electroless nickel on the other hand strips easy and requires only a light diamond buff to restore the finish. Will need to make a decision soon. May be Matt's article will shed some light. I think Electroless nickel plating will not work in this case as Nickel's hardness is not enought,Titanium
layer is recommended.or you may take a look to www.Bekaert.com,they provide special plating layer to protect your mould.
