I am looking for a good way to estimate the cost for tool steel. Has anyone seen or know of a good index to calculate the cost to purchase mold steel

Johno,
I don't use P20. If it is going to be pre-hard tooling I use DH2F or NAK80. For hard tools I use H-13 Premium(ESR Grade), S-7 Premium, 420SS premium. I also add a $1 per pound to cover heat treat as it is a cost directly related to the steel type chosen.

Which brand of steel are you using? Uddeholm? Finkle? Carpenter? International?

Johno,
I believe Tom's price includes a decent markup, which is a Tool Maker tradition.

Wow! $5 to $8 a pound.
I have been getting P-20 for around $1.70 lb and S-7 for $3.50 lb.
I always just call Cincinnati Tool Steel and they quote in 5 minutes over the phone.

When I quote I just use $5-8 a pound depending on size/steel. How exact do you need to be?
