Does this forum have ANY moderators to weed out the spam?

You're smart enough to find a good quality molder in China; that has one or more English speaking employees you can understand; perhaps can write English you can understand, mostly, in 3 readings; won't run your tools for themselves/someone else; will have the parts ready on schedule; will produce the parts you want/need/have been producing, even if every dang nitnoid detail weren't in a spec.

But what are are you going to do in order to:

- Solve the outrageous shipping costs from China? Ocean or Air. Check cost of a 40" now vs a couple years ago.
- Lead time problem - Your product is a success and you want/need a resupply in 3 weeks, NOT 3 months. Ship it by Air????
- You're yesterday's news problem. They just had the "Big" guys in your industry walk in with a BIG order. Who's calling please? Never heard of you.
- The English speaking guy/guys jumped ship to another mfg and we've never heard of him/know where he went (or your tool).
- Get a tool made with NEW Western/US parts, materials, and standards.
- Make those casual little inspection trips to the toolmaker/modler going to cost in time/expense? Old molder is 10 miles not 10000 miles away. Drop in for in progress inspecion, 1st sampling, pilot production, etc, work OK?

It is true that China is famous as a "world workshop". It is not so scare as you imagine to. Why do afraid of making a product with lower cost and the same quality? Just be careful when you make decision, here is my some suggestions:

1. Give them some RFQ to see if they are professional and prompt
2. Visit the factory before you are going to give them order
3. Start with a small order

After you have developed a stable relationship with a factory, you could consider to be a shareholder of the factory, to deal more trade base on it.

That is exactly what I did. I was a mold maker/engineer for 25 years in the US. After a 2 1/2 year assignment in China I resigned from our US company after 15 years with them and now work for a Singaporean Tool Shop with facilities in China and Thailand.

From my experience I would never do a JV, about 70-80% of them fail. Start your own operation in China and find reputable long term suppliers for tooling (such as my company).
Starting a WOFE (wholly owned foreign enterprise) is very easy there days (I did it for my company with no experience at it) and there are a lot of very talented people in China to choose from for your staff.

we winde up fixing the products that company send to china, since greedy corporate trying to save 5.00 dollars . Does that helP. not neccessary when we have to fix the problem , and then pressure us here in u.s.a to finish the mold that went wrong in china.

If you are going to relocate, what about considering Malaysia? The prices are certainly cheap but the standards of workmanship are high and, importantly, everyone speaks English which makes communication a million times easier.

I've just joined a Malaysian mouldmaking company and, as a Brit, I've had no issues with talking to my collegues. I'm not sure it's so easy in China. And, although I'm new to this industry, I've now visited a few toolmakers over here and I've been really impressed with the setup.

China can make stuff cheap, at an ok speed with ok quality. But they lack style and innovation. Some may say that style and innovation are not huge factors but do we all remember Mr. Ford with his innovative assembly line. I think everyone knows that style has done tons for the Mac computer company. So before you go over to China, don’t ask if someone else can make it cheaper faster and better. Find a company that will make your product cheaper faster and better than those companies in the Far East. You will be able to tell the children of tomorrow that you were not part of the outsourcing crisis.

If you are considering working with Chinese companies, the most important thing is to do your research. Most shops here are absolute crap. You'll notice responses regarding China mention, find a "reputable" company. This is hard to do, especially considering the language issue. A lot of people go through a sourcing company to overcome this, but that means increased costs. I've been living and working in China now for two yaers and I know first-hand about the very real concerns when partnering with the Chinese, and also the very real advantages. China is certainly a great place for moulding, with a lot of benefits, but there is also a long line of people waiting to grab every cent they can get their fingers on with no regard to ethics. Even in Korea we are having problems with the China market. Their labor costs are just too low. Our strategy is to increase our quality of products and services, as well as shorten lead times. Before considering a JV in China (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em) look inside your own company for solutions- streamline the labor process, find lower cost materials sources, increase customer service etc. (if you can't beat 'em, try try again til you do).
And keep in mind, as China's quality and technology increase, so will their prices.

We are a mold maker with a JV in Taiwan. We have been a partner with our JV since 1998.

We have also looked at Chinese partners but have not found any that can compete with our costs but even more important our lead times. Typical leadtime for our molds is 30 days to T1 samples. Most Chinese shops that we have quoted are quoting above 8 weeks.

From our experience partnering with a local (UK) company that has already established communications with Asia is probably the best option to begin with.

I think the competition from China is unavoidable, but we must face it. I am a Chinese mould maker, I think in US and Europe, they can gain high-quality accounts and provide the solution, the rest part our Chinese maker we are able to complete, internet has narrowed the distance between buyer and supplier. World is increasing become transparent and borderless.
As a international trader, I think, escape and afraidness is useless, the only thing we can do is to make best use of our recource,and co-operate. I suggest you can meet some Chinese moulder and spare your time to come to China, to talk with them, to know them, anywhere, any field exist competition.

I represent a consortium of five Chinese mold makers; our office is in the Southern province of Guandong. So my perspectie is a little different. There are still many US customers that are afraid of China, with their concerns ranging from tool quality to global geo-politics.

A viable strategy is to partner with a good Chinese mold maker, and present a hybrid solution to your customers, where you "manage" the die fabrication, and perform some finish work in the US or Europe. In terms of actually molding the components; the Chinese have material cost disadvantages, and if you can eliminate most of the labor in your mold process, US and European companies can be very competitive, and far more responsive to their customers delivery requirements.
