Five-axis machining functionality

Exacting accuracy in contoured parts and the ability to accomplish five-face machining, thereby eliminating setups, reducing lead times, improving quality, and cutting costs, are attributes of the S56-5XB vertical machining center from Makino (Mason, OH).

Equipped with a 40-by-20-inch worktable with associated travels of 36 by 20 by 18 inches, the unit’s table-mounted tilt/trunnion provides full five-axis capability while the remaining table surface can be used for three-axis work.

The machine's X-, Y-, and Z-axis linear motion guides support rapid traverse and cutting feedrates of 1575 ipm. Its 40-taper, 13,000-rpm spindle provides both speed and rigidity to hardmill high-quality surface finishes. As an option, the S56-5XB can be equipped with a 20,000-rpm spindle featuring Makino’s patented spindle technology for further productivity. The machine is equipped with a standard 20-tool (30-tool optional) magazine and automatic tool changer.

The S56-5XB also incorporates Makino’s Super Geometric Intelligence (SGI.4) servocontrol for exceptionally smooth surfaces, even in high-feedrate machining of complex shapes. SGI.4 software helps reduce cycle times in three-dimensional parts by as much as 40%. —immeditorial@cancom.com
