Dual-spark EDM speeds machining

 Makino’s new DUO series of wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) centers are said to be the first to offer a dual spark generator and dual wire guide options, reportedly resulting in greater speed and accuracy, as well as a superior finish. The two spark impulses simultaneously released by the DUO create a waveform that cuts up to 30% faster. Split V or PICO Precision guides are available, and an automatic wire threader threads wire in 10 seconds or less. Makino says testing of the DUO shows that its new 0.012-inch (0.3-mm) wire technology results in 62.5% less wire consumption, so that at an average 2500-hr run rate per year, shops can realize more than $12,000 annually in wire savings.
