Machining hard, tough materials

Makino (Mason, OH) says its a81M horizontal machining center was developed for large-diameter boring and face milling on hard and tough materials including stainless steel, titanium and its alloys, inconel, ductile and cast iron, and compacted graphite iron (CGI). The integral drive spindle of the Makino a81M is said to provide higher torque at a low rpm. For work with significant spindle stopping, starting, and reversal, such as tapping, the a81M is particularly fast and has less idle time. Its tool-to-tool time of 1.7 seconds and its 4.2-second chip-to-chip time also boost efficiency. The drive spindle, which employs a standard CAT 50-taper tool holder with an HSK-A100 option, has a peak torque rating of 744 ft-lb (1009 N/m). To match that torque, the spindle employs 50 hp from 2000-5000 rpm. The a81M has 25% more axes thrust than the previous a81 machine. A center-trough hinged conveyor provides fast and effective chip evacuation, and a 40-tool ATC is standard.?RN
