Resin pricing: PP contracts declining $.03/lb; PE rolling flat

The commodity resin markets continued to see heightened activity during the week of June 16-20, but as for spot pricing - well, The Plastics Exchange reported another uneventful week and so, "steady as she goes." June polyethylene contracts are rolling flat once again, while polypropylene contracts are declining $.03/lb this month. Higher world oil prices have encouraged international resin traders to again look to North America for well-priced supply.

Long fiber thermoplastic (LFT) supplier PlastiComp, Inc. (Winona, MN) has introduced a line of basalt fiber-reinforced composites. Nordson Corp. has appointed Regis Machinery (Sales) Ltd. as its agent in the United Kingdom and Ireland for its extrusion dies product lines, it was announced by Andrei Stapinoiu, managing director of Nordson EDI Europe. 

Regis Machinery will provide sales and support services for Nordson EDI Europe's range of flat dies and related systems for film, sheet, extrusion coating, and fluid coating. The company has long provided representation for Nordson's Kreyenborg line of pumps and screen changers and its BKG line of pelletizers.

Microbes to the rescue in marine plastic pollution?

"Epiplastic microbiota," says a new study from the University of Western Australia, are an important force affecting the fate of marine plastic pollution. PhD candidate Julia Reisser and colleagues have published an article in the international journal PLOS One, in which they describe an "epiplastic community" successfully living off the plastic debris floating around in the oceans of Australia.

Contractors building Brazil's much-needed infrastructure to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup famously played fast and loose with deadlines. The folks at American Precision Prototyping (APP; Tulsa, OK) did not have that luxury when they were tasked with meeting a 30-day deadline for designing, molding, decorating, and shipping more than 150 impact-resistant polyurethane carriers for POWERADE drink bottles to the games. The company's design and build teams turned to a combination of advanced technologies and materials to turn around this project for the Coca Cola Co.

At the recent Thermoplastic Composites Conference for Automotive held in Novi, MI, in conjunction with amerimold, Mike Shinedling, advanced engineering manager for Street Racing Technology (SRT) and program manager for Chrysler's Viper, noted that vehicle was "born to be a rival of the Shelby Cobra." The Viper has a carbon fiber and aluminum body, and also has applications for composites and thermoplastics.
