Film extrusion: EDI installs 1.6m cast film line in application lab

Extrusion Dies Industries LLC (EDI; Chippewa Falls, WI) has installed a 1.6m (63-inch) extrusion line at its process lab, allowing for its own and customer research into new cast films, coatings, or laminations. The line is capable of laboratory-scale single- or multilayer production, as well as web converting, with five extruders that can produce single- or multilayer cast films at thicknesses from 8 to 125 µm (0.3 to 5 mils). EDI declined to reveal the make of the line or total investment cost.

Plastics pricing: PET prices up in Asia in anticipation of a thirsty summer

In Asia, spot polyethylene terephthalate (PET) prices ended the year on a rising trend, with industry insiders predicting that prices will continue to firm up in the days ahead.

Greenhouse gas finds new home inside plastics

Carbon dioxide gets as much bad press as plastics do, so it's nice to share a story in which both are the "good guys." Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute say they have devised a process to impregnate plastics with carbon dioxide. Should it prove successful on a commercial scale, the process could prove a means to decrease the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere while also improving certain properties in the impregnated plastics.

Italy becomes first EU country to ban plastic bags
