Adapter module helps blenders communicate

The translation software in a new adapter module allows communications between Maguire weigh scale blenders and other machines. Using the three most widely applied fieldbus protocols in plant management systems, the Maguire Fieldbus Interface (MFI) allows molders to extract batch-by-batch material consumption data from the blender to enhance control of molding in a production line or to further centralize plantwide management.

Maguire?s MLAN blender software supports Profibus DP, DeviceNet, and Modbus fieldbus protocols to make the cross-machine communication possible. The MFI adapters have a card for internal installation, or an external installation via a serial interface.

Data gathered include material types and settings for batch recipes, cycle-by-cycle material consumption reports, and blender status. For molding, Maguire says the MFI could use raw material metering data at the blender and molding cycle information from the press to calculate the average shot size in a given number of cycles. The adapter is priced at $750.
