Additive helps LDPE packaging biodegrade in 1-5 years

Article-Additive helps LDPE packaging biodegrade in 1-5 years

A proprietary organic additive included in the recipe for Pregis Corp.’s HC Renew LDPE protective cushioning helps the plastic to biodegrade in landfills in 1-5 years. Adding to its sustainable label is inclusion of up to 10% recyclate.

A proprietary organic additive included in the recipe for Pregis Corp.’s HC Renew LDPE protective cushioning helps the plastic to biodegrade in landfills in 1-5 years. Adding to its sustainable label is inclusion of up to 10% recyclate.

HC Renew is used in conjunction with Pregis’ AirSpeed HC air pillow machine. Operators can inflate the hybrid cushioning on-demand for void fill in packed goods, for example.
HC is the processor’s designation for its protective cushioning range of products, with the new Renew products cushioning material microbial biodegradable but, says Pregis (Deerfield, IL), also recyclable. It will not begin to biodegrade until it is disposed of in a microbe-rich environment, such as a landfill.

According to the company, its HC Renew can be transported in high heat and has a longer shelf life than starch-based degradable products. The film used is tinted green using an organic colorant. HC Renew is compliant with ASTM D5511, which covers the degree and rate of anaerobic biodegradation of plastic materials in high-solids anaerobic conditions such as landfills. [email protected]
