AkzoNobel adds paint film to portfolio with Soliant acquisition

Traditional paints and coatings supplier AkzoNobel (Troy, MI) is branching into nontraditional modes of component coloring with the acquisition of paint-film supplier Soliant LLC (Lancaster, SC). In a release, AkzoNobel said its Automotive Plastics Coatings group will now enjoy the synergies of a combined liquid and film product line, as well as providing its customers with sustainable paint solutions. Jim Rees, general manager for AkzoNobel Car Refinishes said the acquisition of Soliant’s paint-film, which provides thermoformed and injection molded components with a color-matchable, class A, mar-resistant finish without the VOCs associated with traditional paint lines, is about “developing a new approach to our markets.”
Soliant was established in 2002 as a management buyout from former owner Rexam PLC. Its Lancaster, SC manufacturing facility employs approximately 100. Subject to regulatory approvals, the acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of September. AkzoNobel Car Refinishes supplies paints and services for the car repair, commercial vehicle, and automotive plastics markets.
