Japanese robot maker Harmo Co. (Nagano, Japan) plans to set up a manufacturing operation in China in 2009, most likely in the country’s south in Guangdong Province. “We will need to focus closely on economic trends given the current global financial situation, but our plan is to start making the same products in China, as we manufacture in Japan starting this year,” says company President Hideaki Hama. Plans also call for procurement of locally made components to be gradually stepped up.

Automation: Harmo adds robot production in China

Harmo says it has seen new orders fall sharply since October 2008 due to global financial turmoil. “Hong Kong processors have stopped investing, period,” says Hama. To ride the downturn, Harmo intends to cut costs, offer robots that respond directly to market needs, and add more value to its product offerings. It will also target increased sales in markets where it currently has a low share, such as the U.S. Hama expects it will take at least a year for sales to return to 2006 levels.—[email protected]
