All systems are go at Engel North America’s expanded automation center at company headquarters in York, PA. The renovation that began in August 2022 culminated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 7, 2023, unveiling 15,000 square feet of production, office area, and logistics space, providing room for increased operations.

The expansion doubles the amount of space that was previously available. With 13 projects running in parallel, the expanded facility has the capacity to realize 50 to 70 projects per year, catering specifically to the US market. The expanded center is staffed by a dedicated team of approximately 35 members.

UL-certified production cells are available from Engel that cover every aspect from conception, design, and manufacturing to startup, validation, and after-sales service.

Demand for automation continues to grow

North America has been a lucrative market for the company, which has its global headquarters in Austria. Each year, Engel said it delivers 350 to 400 robot and automation products to the US market. And the future looks even brighter for automation providers, as manufacturers wrestle with increasing wages and a persistent shortage of skilled labor.

Best known for its injection molding machines, Engel also has more than 40 years of automation experience. The expanded center in York adds to the company's global network of automation centers. "We specialize in producing a range of automation products, including articulated robots and custom solutions, such as de-gating stations, label systems, conveying technologies, safety enclosures, feeding devices for insertions, quality inspection systems, cooling stations, end-of-arm tooling, and assembly lines," said Stefan Aberl, vice president of automation for North America, who joined Engel North America President Vanessa Malena at the ribbon cutting.

"With a focus on automotive, technical molding, and medical industries, Engel delivers complete UL-certified production cells that cover every aspect from conception, design, and manufacturing to startup, validation, and after-sales service," added Malena.

Assistant systems boost performance

The new automation center introduces assistant systems that optimize performance, precision, and energy efficiency, noted Engel. The company’s automation products integrate into a single controller, facilitating seamless coordination between injection molding machines and automation systems. So-called “smart” features enable faster cycle times, reduced downtime, and maximum output, according to Engel.
