Chinese EV OEM opts for ABS for multiple EV components

Styrenic resin supplier Ineos Styrolution says three of its grades from their family of ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) materials have been selected by Nio, a Chinese automotive company dedicated to electrical vehicles (EVs), for their new ES8 model. Nio selected Ineos Styrolution’s ABS materials for applications such as door panel, mirror housing and B-pillar. The ES8 also employs a 20% carbon fiber-reinforced PP grade from Borealis in a center console weighing 8 kg.

The Nio ES8 electric vehicle employs a host of high-performance materials, including high heat ABS grades and carbon fiber-reinforced polypropylene.

Terluran GP-22 ABS, a grade known for its good impact resistance, mechanical strength and rigidity as well as its high-quality surface finish and gloss, has been selected as the material for door panels of the ES8’s door modules.

Novodur H701, an ABS grade from Ineos Styrolution’s high heat product family, has been selected for the mirror housing. The grade is popular for its heat resistance, high impact strength and easy flowing.

Novodur HH-106, another member of the high heat ABS product family, was chosen for the B-pillar of the model ES8. Novodur HH-106 reportedly excels with a balanced property profile making it the material of choice for a wide range of automotive applications.
