A Canadian plastics company that provides injection-molded parts for the automotive and consumer goods industries is set to establish its first US factory with a $19 million investment in Charlotte, MI.

Markdom Michigan Plastics Inc., a subsidiary of Toronto-based Markdom International, supplies parts for General Motors. The planned facility is expected to employ about 170 people, according to the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP), which helps foreign businesses establish operations in the Lansing, MI, area.

Nick Orlando, CEO of Markdom International, said the company is excited to expand its operations in Charlotte.

“This new facility marks an important step in our growth, and we are grateful for the strong support from the city of Charlotte, LEAP, and regional partners,” he said. “We look forward to creating opportunities for the local workforce and contributing to the region’s economic vitality.”

Charlotte Mayor Tim Lewis said the plant would be Markdom’s first in the United States. The city has supported the project by approving a 12-year industrial facilities tax abatement, which will freeze half of the property’s new tax revenue for that period.

“The city of Charlotte and our entire community are thrilled to welcome Markdom International to our business community,” Lewis said. “Their state-of-the-art production facility will be a great addition to our industrial park.”

The company operates facilities at its headquarters in Toronto and in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. It also has an engineering, program management, and sales site in Eaton Rapids, MI.
