Trelleborg Group reports that it has signed an agreement to acquire Magee Plastics, a supplier of thermoplastic and composite products for the transportation and aerospace sectors based in Warrendale, PA. Sweden-based Trelleborg made the transaction through its Sealing Solutions business area.

Fifity-six-year-old Magee Plastics applies industry-leading design skills, quality, and performance to develop interior solutions to meet complex specifications, said Trelleborg in the announcement. The company reported sales of approximately $22.5 million in 2023.

Portfolio of design, production tools

Magee has extensive product development tools and software along with vacuum and pressure forming, compression molding, and injection molding equipment. Materials processed include ABS, PVC, PC, PPS, PEI, PA, and composites. In-house toolmaking and part prototyping and fabrication is supported by 3-, 4-, and 5-axis milling machines.

“The acquisition strengthens Trelleborg’s position in the aerospace industry by adding cutting-edge expertise in thermoforming and vacuum forming,” said Jürgen Bosch, business area president of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions. “The acquisition also broadens Trelleborg’s interior fittings offering for the aerospace industry, which is expected to generate favorable sales synergies. The business also includes an FAA145-certified service workshop that will increase Trelleborg´s share of aftermarket services and further strengthen customer relationships,” said Bosch.

Long-term growth projected for aerospace sector

Robust growth is forecast for the aerospace industry in the years ahead. Currently valued at $328 billion, the global aerospace market is projected to reach $430.9 billion by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 7%, according to UK-based business consultancy The Redline Group. Some analysts even predict that the market could reach $1.2 billion in the next decade.

To meet anticipated demand, Trelleborg said it is making bolt-on acquisitions and increasing capacity in existing operations. In May, it announced investment in a state-of-the-art facility in Morocco for the production of sealing solutions for the aerospace industry. The facility will begin operations by the end of 2025.

The Magee Plastics deal is expected to be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2024. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
