Disposable and biodegradable tableware injection molded from starch-based Mater-Bi was used to serve swimmers from 193 Federations at the 13th FINA World Championships (July 18-Aug. 2, in the Italian cities of Rome and Ostia). Supplier Novamont (Novara, Italy) provided the OK Compost-certified tableware, molded using hot runners, that guarantees 90-day compostability if properly disposed of in a suitable industrial plant in compliance with European standard EN13432.

The initiative was part of the Italian Ministry of the Environment’s efforts to make the event truly eco-friendly. Indeed, all of the event Village was lighted using low-energy bulbs, and all CO2 emissions attributable to the event (from energy consumption to athlete and visitor transport) were to be offset through CO2 reduction initiatives of a similar order, so as to neutralise its carbon footprint. —[email protected]
