Matrix Packaging will open a new extrusion blowmolding operation in St. Louis, MO for processing of household chemical and personal care bottles. Matrix, which is a division of packaging firm Sonoco (Hartsville, SC), reports that the plant will cover 150,000-sq-ft and initially house six extrusion blowmolding machines. Technically located in Hazelwood, MO, the facility will also employ 75 workers and is expected to be online by early 2008. Matrix also plans to add three new blowmolding machines to sites in Canada, Los Angeles, and Jefferson City, MO before the end of the year.

Earlier this summer, Sonoco paid $210 million cash to purchase Matrix Packaging Inc. (Mississauga, ON; MPW First Look, July 2007). Matrix operates six facilities between the U.S. and Canada, employing 860, and in addition to extrusion blowmolding, it performs injection stretch blowmolding and injection molding. The company was expected to have annualized 2007 sales of $140 million. In another move, at the end of 2006, Sonoco finalized the purchase of extruded and thermoformed packaging manufacturer, Clear Pack Co. (Franklin Park, IL).—[email protected]
