Cleaner, quieter oil-free air compressor for clean-room operation

A new water-injected AQ 15-30 variable speed drive (VSD) air compressor is described by its manufacturer as being ideal for applications in sensitive environments, delivering ISO 8573-1 Class 0 certified clean, oil-free air for industries that manufacture sensitive applications specific to medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and electronics.

Atlas Copco Compressors expanded its oil-free line with the introduction of the water-injected AQ 15-30 VSD air compressor. In addition to oil-free operation for cleanroom environments, Atlas Copco says the VSD technology provides additional energy savings of about 35% by adjusting compressor output to air demands in a closed loop fashion. The AQ 15-30 range features four models, including both air-cooled and water-cooled versions, in 20-, 25-, 30-, and 40-hp motor sizes.ac0047398_192.jpg

The system's cooling capability removes heat from the source, reducing stress levels for compressor components and extending machine life. Atlas Copco says the screw compression process is amplified due to high-quality polymer ceramic rotors and element bearings that actually slide on water, providing smooth rotation that further extends compressor life.

The company says the refrigerated dryer concept also eliminates pressure drops and the need for an external dryer, while helping avoid air leaks that can be caused by multiple connections. The Elektonikon controller allows the compressor to can be monitored from anywhere.

In addition to energy savings, the AQ 15-30 also offers quiet operation, registering decibel levels in the 60s, which Atlas Copco says is quieter than a conventional residential vacuum cleaner.
