  • Fahr Bucher, Gottmadingen, Germany, has now opened a sales and service office in Beijing on the premises of its sister company Laeis Bucher. The company is aiming to extend its on-the-spot customer service and expand its service network for injection moulding machines in the promising Chinese market.

  • DSM, Sittard, The Netherlands, intends to participate in the construction of a new low-density PE plant at the Map Ta Phut location in Thailand. In conjunction with a national consortium that is constructing a fully integrated petrochemicals complex on this site, a high-pressure PE plant with an overall capacity of 200,000 tons is to be built by 2000. DSM is supplying the technology and is responsible for marketing the products outside Thailand.

  • Penn Engineering, Danboro, Pennsylvania, USA, has opened a company-owned stocking distributor and sales office for its PEM self-clinching fasteners in Singapore. This action was a result of Penn's acquisition of its Singapore-based distributor, Techtran Pte. The new operation will serve customers in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and India, as well as agents serving other Asia/Pacific distributors. Says Penn CEO Kenneth Swanstrom, "The Asian/Pacific market is poised for substantial growth."

  • Customers in Europe may now purchase Rogers Corp. phenolic moulding compounds directly from the company, located in Manchester, Connecticut, USA.

  • LNP Engineering Plastics, Exton, Pennsylvania, USA, has announced a new licensing and supply agreement with E.I DuPont deNemours Co., Wilmington, Delaware, USA. Under the agreement, DuPont will supply LCP to LNP for compounding and will license certain technology to allow LNP to produce specialty compounds using DuPont's LCP as the base resin.

    Additionally, custom thermoplastic compounds are the main product in a new LNP plant recently opened in Seremban, Malaysia. The new plant is equipped to manufacture a broad range of specialty and custom thermoplastic compounds. Output of this plant will serve the local market, as well as Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, and Thailand. More DuPont news: glass-reinforced grades of Zytel nylon resins will be produced at a new compounding operation in Tuas, Singapore. The plant has a capacity of about 10,000 metric tons per year.

  • Lyondell Petrochemical Co., Houston, Texas, USA, Nissan Chemical Industries, Tokyo, and Maruzen Polymer Corp., Tokyo, have recently announced plans to jointly promote the licensing of the Nissan slurry high-density polyethylene technology. The cascade reactor system in the Nissan technology allows manufacture of high strength resins. Lyondell Alathon and Maruzen Chemirez-HD HMW film resins can be used for injection moulding.

  • Dyneon, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, a new joint venture between 3M Specialty Fluoropolymers Dept., St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, and Hoechst AG, Frankfurt, Germany, is a company focused on the expanding global fluoropolymers market. In addition to providing global support for its existing business, Dyneon plans to develop and commercialize many new high-performance fluoropolymer products. The new company will have sales of approximately US$ 350 million and will employ approximately 600 people in various locations in the United States, Germany, and Belgium.

  • A new joint venture of BASF AG and Tongyang Nylon Co. Ltd., Hysung-BASF Co. Ltd. (HBC) plans to increase the capacity for Terluran ABS from 40,000 metric tons to 190,000 metric tons annually at its plant in Ulsan, South Korea. The expanded plant, which is scheduled to go onstream in October 1997, will be the world's biggest single plant for the production of ABS. Another plant, also equipped with the new technology, is coming onstream by BASF in Ludwigshafen, Germany, increasing total capacity of styrene copolymers to 190 metric tons per year. BASF will invest DM 1 billion (US$ 660 million) in styrene copolymers over the next ten years.

  • Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tennessee, USA, has announced a new business organization, Specialty Plastics, resulting from joining its Specialty Packaging Plastics and Performance Plastics businesses. Combining these businesses improves the company's focus on key specialty plastics market and applications.
