Composites: AGY boosts glass-fiber output again

Article-Composites: AGY boosts glass-fiber output again

Following a 50% increase in its production capacity earlier this year, glass-fiber manufacturer AGY (Aiken, SC) announced a further 20% increase in its output as it attempts to keep pace with demand for composite armor systems in U.S. military vehicles. AGY completed a new manufacturing facility in Aiken earlier this year, but it has already shipped a record amount of its S-2 Glass fiber products in 2008, outstripping previous records set in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Originally developed in the 1960’s for military applications, S-2 offers a tensile strength that exceeds standard-modulus carbon fiber and most grades of aramid fiber, as well as strain-to-failure levels of 5.7%, compared to 2.8% for aramid, and 1.5% for carbon. The fibers are compatible with epoxies, polyesters, vinyl esters, rubber, and many thermoplastic resins.
