Independent safety testing company Underwriters Laboratories has bulked up its ability to test medical devices with its acquisition of two mdt medical device testing GmbH (MDT) and md registration support Ltd. (MDRS).
Both of the acquired entities are in Ochsenhausen, Germany, and will be merged into UL's Life and Health business unit. The purchase adds additional ability for UL (Northbrook, IL) to test function, safety and compliance of medical devices and to assist with registration of these.
MDT operates a test laboratory for the medical services industry, with its specialty clinical and non-clinical testing services for regulatory and routine control purposes. For UL, the addition of MDT and MDRS further supports its ability globally to help medical device manufacturers obtain required medical device certification.
"The deepening of our service offerings will put the UL brand in front of a wider variety of customers - including some of the biggest companies in the medical and health field," said Anil Patel, GM of UL Health Sciences. "From sterile gauze and bandages to more complex devices such as bone screws, contact lenses, orthopedic, dental and other implantable devices, UL's testing capabilities will help manufacturers develop products that will keep patients healthy and mobile."
MDT and MDRS will continue to be headquartered in Ochsenhausen, with Dieter Dannhorn remaining with the companies and serving as the general manager. MDT, founded in 1988, employs about 40.
