German PVC group finds fault with toy study

The German federal department (BVL) responsible for consumer protection and food stuff assurance just released a report covering locally produced and imported dolls and toys processed from PVC. A number of the tested items contained illegal plasticizers such as DEHP, DBP, and BBP and are said to pose a public health threat.

Werner Preusker, managing director of the country’s PVC interests group, Arbeitsgemeinschaft PVC and Umwelt (Bonn; www.agpu.de), takes issue with the report by indicating that 94% of the tested dolls passed inspection without fault since German toy makers have all switched to alternative plasticizers. It appears that those containing no longer permitted phthalate plasticizers were found in imported items.—[email protected]
