KraussMaffei ramps up China injection machine production

Chinese automotive component suppliers are increasingly relying on German engineering expertise in order to attract global automobile manufacturers with high parts quality. Buoyed by this trend, German injection machine builder KraussMaffei (Munich) recently decided to double the production area at its plant in the Chinese city of Haiyan. The preparations are in full swing so that the complete production and assembly of large made-in-China machines can start in spring 2014. KraussMaffei only started building machines in China at the beginning of this year.

"We are noticing this trend and adapting our customized machines to the needs of customers," said Frank Peters, Vice President Sales at KraussMaffei. One of the first injection molding machines to be supplied completely from Haiyan will be an MX 1300-8100 for Chinese Tier I Yanfeng. This machine will be equipped with the new MuCell system, a process for physical foaming of plastic parts. This process makes plastic parts up to 35 percent lighter than comparable parts.

Yanfeng is a leading global supplier of automotive trim and German injection molding machine user.

The well-established Chinese manufacturer of automotive components inspected the machine portfolio of KraussMaffei at K2013 and ordered a KraussMaffei injection molding machine produced in China. General Manager Shelley Wang from Yanfeng and Peters also agreed further global cooperation between their companies in the area of processing of thermoplastics and duroplastics. Discussions concerning other machines are currently being held. The Group has been using injection molding machines from KraussMaffei for many years.

"We are delighted to provide our know-how to support Yanfeng as a strong supplier on the global automotive market," said Peters. "And we see great potential for further cooperation."

Yanfeng USA Automotive Trim Systems is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yanfeng Visteon Automotive Trim System (Shanghai). Yanfeng Visteon operates plants in China, the USA and India. It is one of the leading suppliers of interior and exterior parts, seat and safety systems, and electronics in automobiles.

According to the company, 30 automobile marques are supplied by around 100 of its production plants and sales centers. In addition to the expansion of its Chinese plants, Yanfeng also plans other production sites in North America and Europe for 2014. For example, a new automotive trim manufacturing facility is planned for Riverside, Missouri.
