When you've been voted as the no. 1 and no. 2 "Best Place to Work" in the plastics industry, it only makes sense that you're on the fast track for growth. Micro Mold Co. and sister company Plastikos, located in Erie, PA, continues to expand its operations, announcing a major facility and equipment expansion in order to satisfy the growing production demand from its global medical device OEM customer base.
The facility expansion will comprise over 17,000 sq-ft of additional state-of-the-art space at Plastikos, with the heart of the medical expansion being an ISO 7 (Class 10,000) injection molding cleanroom, quality, general office and meeting room space. The addition will accommodate eight new injection molding machines specifically designed for medical cleanroom molding.
Plastikos' medical expansion will also include a separate ISO 7 assembly and packaging lab, as well as corresponding medical production support departments to also include mold and machine maintenance, and tool room. The new ISO 7 cleanroom will be one of the largest Class 10,000 cleanrooms available in the injection molding industry, according to the company.
"We are very excited to announce Plastikos' medical expansion project, which marks a new and exciting chapter in the Micro Mold and Plastikos story," commented Philip Katen, president and general manager for Plastikos.
The target date for completion of the project is slated for Q1 of 2015, and initial efforts are already well underway to reach that date, the company said in its information. The facility expansion and additional press capacity - coupled with an expanding customer base - will provide a solid path to future growth.
"Our fiscally conservative, organic growth strategy has enabled us to make the necessary capital investment throughout history to support the growth of our customers in their respective industries," Katen said. "We view today's investment as part of the commitment that we make to those customers, who create the exciting new opportunities ahead for our team."
Plastikos' total production capacity is projected to increase by over 30% once the medical expansion is fully equipped and staffed, which in turn will create significant new customer, project, and employment opportunities over the coming years.
Plastikos is a custom injection molding company that works closely with Micro Mold, on precision mold design and fabrication, engineering, and production services for small, tight-tolerance applications. Since 1978, these two companies have partnered with its OEM customers to push the engineering and technical limits of injection molding, living up to its tag line: "Make the Impossible, Possible."
Both Plastikos and Micro Mold have a number of new medical projects that will come online during the remainder of 2014 through 2015, which spurred the cleanroom expansion.
In addition to serving the medical industry, Plastikos and Micro Mold also serve customers in the aerospace, automotive defense, and telecommunications industries, among others.
