Moldmakers searching for a drill that provides both fast and deep holemaking at an affordable cost per drilled foot have a solution. The CoroDrill 800, a segmented drill from Sandvik, is said to offer higher penetration rates and up to 25 times longer tool life than brazed-type drills. The drill?s indexable insert design features fixed pockets that eliminate presetting. It also uses carbide-coated support pads that reportedly improve coolant flow, thus leading to lower maintenance costs. The steel drill body is manufactured to close tolerances with the insert and pads in an attempt to ensure good surface finish and straight, deep holes. Available in diameters ranging from 1.181 to 2.559 inches (30 to 65 mm), the drill is suitable for stainless steel and most metals. It can handle depths up to 100 times diameter with Sandvik?s Single Tube systems.
