Chemical and engineering materials giant, DuPont (Wilmington, DE) is expanding its research and development reach in Asia and across the globe, opening a global Innovation Center in Korea, servicing the electronics and automotive industries, as well as one in Taiwan, focusing on the electronics and communications markets.

DuPont opens innovation centers in Taiwan and Korea with India and Thailand up next

, focusing on the electronics and communications markets. This fall additional Innovation Centers will open in Thailand and India with more planned in Latin America, Europe, and North America in 2012 and beyond.

DuPont said its goal is to offer "local collaboration and application development and engage customers in inclusive innovation, wherever they are in the world." Connelly said in a presentation that the center would provide an "ideation environment", with real-time connection to DuPont's 75 global R&D and application development centers. The center will have design, testing, training, failures analysis, and processing capabilities, including injection molding and other processing technologies.

DuPont opens Korean, Taiwanese innovation centers

The Korea Innovation Center had its grand opening on June 28, in a ceremony presided over by Thomas M. Connelly, executive VP and chief innovation officer. The Taiwan event was emceed by DuPont CPM Global Business Director Peter Irvine, joined by DuPont East Asia President Carl Lukach, DuPont Taiwan President Steve Chen, and Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs, Yen-Shiang Shih.

On June 7, DuPont chair and CEO, Ellen Kullman, told investors at the JPMorgan Diversified Industries Conference that her company is positioning itself to help companies and governments cope with population expansion.

"We believe DuPont is uniquely positioned to tackle big global challenges that offer the opportunity for significant top-line growth and value creation," Kullman said. "The recent acquisition of Danisco is a perfect fit with our growth strategy around feeding a growing population, decreasing dependence on fossil fuels, and protecting people and the environment."

Kullman said in 2010 that 31% of the DuPont's sales came from products that were introduced within the past 4 years, stressing the need for continued innovation. In DuPont's first-quarter 2011 earnings call on April 21, 2011, the company said that globally its sales were up 18%, with the largest gains in developing markets (+30%), including developing Asia (+32%), developing EMEA (+27%), and Latin America (+30%).
