Article-E-shots Web-exclusive: BASF considers parting with some styrenics

BASF Aktiengesellschaft (Ludwigshafen, Germany) is entertaining an offer for selected portions of its styrenics business in combination with its own evaluation of this segment. Those areas under consideration include its styrene monomer, polystyrene, styrene butadiene copolymer, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene businesses, which have combined 2006 sales of €3.2 billion ($4.4 billion) and around 1000 employees.

“Earnings in our styrenics activities have improved considerably thanks to efficiency optimization measures and fine-tuning of business models. However, further repositioning steps are necessary to meet appropriate levels of profitability,” says John Feldmann, member of the board of executive directors. “We will now begin talks to examine this initial offer as well as consider other options to see if these activities can realize additional potential in their highly competitive markets as part of the portfolio of a company experienced in the global commodities sector.”

The company will concentrate future styrenics activities on foams and specialties for the construction, automotive, packaging, and sports and leisure markets, according to Hans W. Reiners, president of BASF's Styrenics division.
