DOSING/FEEDING

Visitors to the Powder and Bulk Solids Show (Rosemont, IL, May 6-8), organized by Modern Plastics Worldwide?Äôs parent company, Canon Communications, should get an eye-full of new feeders and blenders offered to the sector. The Micro Cone feeder features a screw-less feeding mechanism that is said to accurately dose free-flowing pigments, masterbatches, and additives into a blending system or directly into the process screw of an extruder. Using an induced flow-rotating tube/cone, it doses at a feed rate ranging from 0.2-2dm3/hr (0.007-0.07ft3/hr.). By using an extension tip, the feeder can feed as low as 0.1dm3/hr. Minimum dispersive rate is about two pellets/second. The unit?Äôs design is said to practically eliminate maintenance. The housing swings open for fast material change. The Premier Pneumatics ProBlend Zone Blender, also new, can homogenize free-flowing bulk materials within a hopper or silo. It provides multiple flow zones in which the material can pass at different velocities and residence times. This results in uniform blending, says the manufacturer. It uses a combination of mass flow (first in-first out) with funnel flow (last in-last out) to blend and reduce segregation effects. K-Tron, Pitman, NJ, U.S.A.; +1 856-589-0500; www.ktron.com
