Austrian developer of extrusion systems SML (Lenzing) reports that it has installed its first stretch film line in the United States. The cast stretch film line went into production at Sigma Plastics’ plant in Riverside, CA, in September 2016. The 180-inch-wide, nine-up line was built to UL specifications and modified to meet California's code requirements.
Adjusting the line design to meet state guidelines was a straightforward process, according to SML, which supplies machinery worldwide. The company uses many standard components that are already UL-approved. Key to being awarded the order, however, was gaining Sigma’s confidence that SML, a new supplier to the group, could complete the project on schedule and provide seamless training and support.
To simplify planning for Sigma, the film line was offered with a turnkey package that ran from delivery and installation to full production. In combination with SML’s all-inclusive approach to line supply, which involves the shipping of all interconnecting components such as pipework and cables along with the line, this resulted in both a minimal workload for Sigma’s personnel and rapid assembly and start-up, writes SML in its press release. It took less than 12 weeks to begin production once the shipping containers were on site.
An SML field engineer based in Los Angeles, within an hour’s drive of the Riverside plant, is available for ongoing support. As well as offering technical and process back-up, he is also assisting Sigma’s maintenance personnel as part of SML’s commitment to help customers minimise operating costs.
With its first cast stretch line now in operation in the United States, the company is looking to further expand its business in North America.
