A new multi-resin-compatible extruder features high regrind recovery rates, reduced maintenance costs, and increased throughput in a compact footprint. The Super-G HighSpeed SGHS3500-36D from Processing Technologies International (PTI) advances the technology of its popular SGHS Model 3000 (75mm) extruder by achieving new levels of output and flexibility, said the company. It is the “ideal solution for reliable, cost-effective, high-density manufacturing, yielding high production outputs within a small machinery footprint,” added PTI. It will “bridge the gap between higher levels of both output and regrind consumption and, according to its namesake, will operate at up to 1000 rpm,” said Dana Hanson, PTI President.

Design changes in the new extruder include a re-engineered and increased screw diameter from 3 to 3.5 in. (90 mm), an L/D of 36:1, a 600-hp motor, and a significantly larger feed opening. With a 40% increase in area, the unique feed arrangement permits regrind recovery rates of up to 70% while maintaining consistent output levels throughout the production process. The SGHS3500-36D achieves a maximum output capacity of 3600 pph, resulting in a 33 to 38% increase in throughput compared with PTI’s SGHS3000-36D (75 mm) extruder. Increased output can further improve the bottom line when you take into account the flexibility for quick changeovers made possible by the SGHS’s multi-resin capabilities of processing HIPS, PP, and PET, said PTI.

PP:       2.6                    pph/rpm            (total output = 2,600 pph, based on 1000 rpm)

PET:     4.0                    pph/rpm            (total output = 3,000 pph, based on 750 rpm)

PP:       4.0                    pph/rpm            (total output = 3,600 pph, based on 900 rpm)

PET:     5.3                    pph/rpm            (total output = 4,000 pph, based on 750 rpm)

The above data show specific output (lbs/hr/rpm) and top-line performance (lbs/hr) comparisons between PTi’s SGHS (Super G HighSpeed) models 3000 & 3500 (75 and 90 mm) extruders for PP and PET resins. Testing data compiled at PTI’s Technology Development Center indicate a 30 to 40% increase in output can be anticipated.

While the design of the SGHS3500-36D required adding 18 inches to the overall length of the extruder — an approximte 8.5% increase — the system yields a 20 to 25% increase in manufacturing footprint efficiency over the current high-speed technology, according to PTI. Even with the new SGHS3500-36D’s standard Z configuration 19-ft, 1 in. length and its tuck-under motor option length of 14 ft, 2 in., PTI reportedly still offers the smallest footprint in the category of high-speed extruders.

Other design features include:

  • A robust base and support structure, built primarily for load stabilization and deflection avoidance;

  • PTI’s patented M-ATEX Barrel Glide Supports for assistance in managing thermal expansion;

  • two-stage Super-G Lobe screw technology for ensuring mixing, melt quality, and temperature control.

These features play an essential role in maintaining consistent sheet gauge thickness and achieving high clarity for crystalline and semi-crystalline polymers, said PTI.

The Super-G series uses CoolTouch barrel guards to minimize emission of heat on the surface, while the “out-the-back” screw removal facilitates screw access.

A fully operational, production-scale SGHS3500-36D extrusion system is available for process trials in PTI’s Technology Development Center. The extrusion system’s downstream configuration incorporates a G-Series configurable GCJ661824 roll stand, TRC-66 transfer roll coater, Scantech’s newest X-ray gauge scanner, A66100 sheet accumulator, and ACW6640/2 winder, as well as PTI’s Titan Plus control system for comprehensive data logging, trending, and analytics of process run conditions while producing rolled stock.
