Flexible choices in 3-D object measurement

Article-Flexible choices in 3-D object measurement

Comet VarioZoom digitizing systems from Steinbichler Optotechnik reportedly allow precision measurement of injection molded objects and provide variable resolution and variable field of view functions. This system uses whitelight fringe projection technology and doesn?t require hardware changes or recalibration. The company?s handheld Comet T-Scan triangulation scanner uses a visible laser for high-speed surface evaluation and measures the distance between sensor and object for each surface point in the scan direction. Moving the sensor generates a complete set of surface coordinates, which is displayed in real time. A tracking system determines the sensor position in all six degrees of freedom. This feature enables the optimal positioning of the sensor and the online transformation of the measured coordinates into one coordinate system. Automatic detection of character and contrast lines is provided for quality control, reverse engineering, and design applications.

The CometPlus software module automatically extracts the scanned feature lines from the polygon mesh of the STL file and calculates the theoretical edges from the measured surfaces. The software also exports feature lines as NURBS curves, does edge shaping in polygon meshes, and supports the intuitive elimination of uneven patches and surface errors. CometInspect software will compare the digitized 3-D data with the CAD model and display deviations numerically and graphically. Results can be transformed into any coordinate measurement system.
