Haas Automation (Oxnard, CA) will exhibit its range of high-performance CNC machine tools at EMO 2015, Europe's largest machine tool exhibition in Milan in October, but it's a safe bet that all eyes will be on the Haas F1 car, at least initially. The car on display at the event does not represent the livery or design of the final iteration, but it makes a darn good proxy. The new chassis of the final version of the automobile currently is undergoing wind-tunnel testing at the legendary Scuderia Ferrari workshop in Maranello, Italy.

Haas Automation fulfills need for speed at EMO 2015

Haas Automation (Oxnard, CA) will exhibit its range of high-performance CNC machine tools at EMO 2015, Europe's largest machine tool exhibition in Milan in October, but it's a safe bet that all eyes will be on the Haas F1 car, at least initially. The car on display at the event does not represent the livery or design of the final iteration, but it makes a darn good proxy. The new chassis of the final version of the automobile currently is undergoing wind-tunnel testing at the legendary Scuderia Ferrari workshop in Maranello, Italy. And then it's off to the races in 2016, when it will compete in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

haas-ferrari-625.jpgOnce they take their eyes off the Haas F1 car, show visitors will have an opportunity to admire other applications where speed also can be of the essence. The new UMC-750SS, a high-speed version of the company's universal five-axis machining center, will be among the systems on display. The UMC-750SS is a five-axis, 40-taper model equipped with a 15,000 rpm inline direct-drive spindle, high speed 40+1 tool side-mount tool changer, and powerful, high-speed machining software. It offers travels of 762 x 508 x 508 mm, 30.5 m/min rapids, and an integrated high-speed, dual-axis trunnion table.

Also at EMO will be the newly developed Haas DM-1 high-speed, 40-taper drill/mill centre. The inline direct-drive spindle turns at 15,000 rpm, and allows high-speed rigid tapping. The spindle is coupled directly to the motor to reduce heat, increase power transmission and enhance surface finish. The DM-1, which offers a 508 x 406 x 394 mm work cube, provides cutting feed rates to 30.5 m/min for high speed milling, while the machine's 18+1 side-mount tool changer swaps tools quickly to reduce non-cutting time.

Haas also will showcase its new ST-15 big-bore turning center. The machine now provides a maximum cutting capacity of 356 x 406 mm, with a swing of 406 mm over the cross slide. For shops wanting additional capability for secondary operations, a y-axis version of the ST-15 is also available. The ST-15Y has the same footprint and specifications as the ST-15, but with a maximum capacity of 305 x 406 mm.

EMO 2015 takes place at the Fieramilano exhibition center on October 5 to 10, 2015.
