High-strength, low-density glass filler

High-strength glass bubbles are said to bring higher loading, lower part density, reduced warpage and shrinkage, and increased yield when used as a filler in molded parts. Scotchlite Glass Bubbles S60/18000 are glass microspheres that have an isostatic crush strength of more than 18,000 psi, enabling them to survive molding processes with the highest-performing engineered thermoplastics.

The bubbles are made of a chemically stable soda-lime-borosilicate glass. They?re hollow spheres at one-third atmospheric pressure, surrounded by an exceptionally strong shell of glass. They are virtually inert and are compatible with most polymers. Good temperature and chemical resistance are other reported benefits. The microspheres are formulated with a high strength-to-weight ratio that is said to allow for a higher loading than conventional fillers and with a decreased impact on viscosity.
