Injection molding grade COC features internal mold release

Improved processability thanks to internal mold release reportedly has boosted early acceptance of a new grade of cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) introduced by Topas Advanced Polymers (Florence, KY). The Topas 5013 COC resin targets microfluidic, diagnostic, and optical markets.

The material features clarity and flow properties, and has a heat deflection temperature of 127°C. Topas claims that the 5013 COC resin has the highest flow rate among transparent resins without loss of material strength or optical characteristics. Its low melt viscosity enables molding of ultrathin light-guide plates used in mobile devices. Other features of the material include:

  • minimal birefringence,
  • molding accuracy to the submicron level,
  • low water absorption,
  • less age-related discoloration than comparable materials.

The level of molding accuracy that can be achieved makes the material well suited for medical device applications, and its heat resistance and purity benefit DNA analysis applications, according to the company.

"The boost in processability from the internal mold release has made this new grade the go-to choice for components with high aspect ratios, precision details, and other molding challenges," says Topas President Timothy Kneale.

Topas Advanced Polymers will be exhibiting at the co-located MDM West and PLASTEC West events at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA, on Feb. 11 to 13. Visit the company at booth 917.
