Injection molding: JC spruces up Mercedes-Benz with new TPU, polyester web reinforcement

Article-Injection molding: JC spruces up Mercedes-Benz with new TPU, polyester web reinforcement

A number of details have been revealed by Tier 1 supplier Johnson Controls (Burscheid, Germany) regarding its recent work on the interior of the Mercedes-Benz GLK-class cars. JC molds the cars' instrument-panel carrier with insert molding of polyester fiber webbing used to reinforce the area around the airbag, with this webbing said to help hinder the development of splinters during airbag ignition.

The surface of the instrument panel is formed in mono- or dual colors with a new thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO); these materials are pushing more established ones out of this application, as MPW noted in the Material Thoughts lead article from our December 2008 issue.-[email protected]
