Be “famox” for getting your mold exchange times down to a minute

Mold changeovers are often time-consuming and interrupt productivity, which in turn eats into profitability. To increase both efficiency and productivity, injection molding machine manufacturer Engel has introduced what it calls the "famox" (fast mold exchange) system. According to the company, famox can help molders to change out molds in less than a minute.

Engel developed the "famox" fast mold exchange system to address the shorter production requirements, reduced inventories, and larger range of components and models that processors are being asked to produce, particularly in the automotive industry. These smaller batch runs result in more frequent mold changes. The famox system helps molders avoid the negative impact that multiple mold changeovers have on productivity and the resulting increase in component costs.

The system is equipped with the control logic, visualization and ergonomics of the CC 200 control unit found on Engel injection molding machines. All mold and machine parameters can be transferred from the machine to the mold changing system without external interfaces. The famox system can be installed press-side either on the table itself or on the machine

Typically the system accommodates two molds - one in the press and one waiting on the system's roller conveyor to be easily loaded into the system. That means there is always one mold in the preparation area. Mold changeovers are accelerated via an integral mold pre-heating station and standardized multi-coupling for lines.

A roller conveyor is used to optimize changeovers because unlike chain drives, each roller has its own electric motor, which provides for a more robust operation, says Engel. The famox system will be available in three sizes. The first will be the Engel famox 25 for molds weighing 25 tonnes. Versions for smaller / larger machines and molds will follow.
