For the first time in the three-decade history of the Mold Making and Mold Design Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers, the Mold Maker of the Year was awarded to a person and company headquartered outside North America. The recipient of this award for 2011, S.Y. Chu, is chairman of Zhongshan Pacific Master Precision Injection Ltd., a large mold manufacturer and injection molder based in Zhongshan, China.

Chu started the company in March 2000 and like so much in China, it has grown quickly since then. Zhongshan Pacific now employs approximately 1200 including mold technicians, engineers, and other staff. The company's two divisions of mold manufacturing -- large mold building and small/precision mold building - have capabilities that include high-speed hard milling, wire and EDM sinking EDM; and CMM inspection. It exports between 60-70% of its molds with customers in automotive, appliance and other industries. Zhongshan Pacific also has 100 injection molding machines with clamp force up to 1200 tonnes. Plastics processing capabilities include insert/encapsulation molding plus a variety of secondary operations including screen printing, hot stamping, pad printing, wet paint line, and full assembly capability.
Scott Peters, the SPE Mold Making and Mold Design Division International Chair Elect presented the SPE Mold Maker of the Year award to S.Y. Chu. In his presentation remarks, Peters noted that he met Chu while working in his position as operations manager for window blinds supplier HunterDouglas Manufacturing China Co. Ltd. "Over the past 35 years I have had the extreme honor to meet and work with other highly dedicated mold makers and designers from around North America and Europe," said Peters. "While in my current role I have continued my deep ties to the North American plastics and moldmaking industries. As a result of living in Guangzhou for the past three years, I have forged new relationships with industry leaders here in China. In those new relationships I have found new friends and colleagues that share the same passion for our industry as those I have known in America and Canada. This has been a richly rewarding time in my career."
Peters went on to say that Chu's success could be measured in a number of ways, including differentiating his company from the many others in Southern China and the world by:
Establishing a clear market plan
Determining to set the standards for his market niche
Having a clear vision for the future of his company and industry
Managing the financial and human capital employed in his company
Another of Chu's goals, noted Peters, was to be a "good corporate citizen" by treating his customers as partners; adopting a "win-win" approach to doing business, and maintaining a healthy environment for his colleagues with a focus on safety, development of their craft through on-going training and providing them a career path.
A $500.00 honorarium, made possible by a donation from hot runner and mold suppliers' manufacturer DME Company, was awarded in the recipient's name by the Division to the mold making and mold design program at GangKou Technical School.
