Donnelly Custom Manufacturing Co., a supplier of short-run injection molding services for industrial OEMs, has installed a 70-ton Engel 330H vertical rotary press at its operation in Alexandria, MN. The press improves efficiencies in the production of complex insert molded parts, helping Donnelly’s current and new customers speed delivery of innovative and high-quality products and, in the process, gain a competitive advantage, according to the company.
Originally purchased at NPE 2018, the Engel press automates insert molding procedures. An onboard camera and laser scan the molds to detect the presence and proper placement of inserts in order to protect the mold, provide ongoing quality control and optimize productivity. The rotary press also features Industry 4.0 connectivity, furthering Donnelly’s manufacturing efficiencies by providing more precise control of the process.
“The Engel press is another example of how Donnelly continually invests in technologies that allow us to cost-effectively deliver increasingly higher quality parts in shorter timeframes,” said Ron Kirscht, President of Donnelly. “When combined with our short-run expertise, advanced technologies put us in the best position to help OEMs effectively compete and thrive.”
Installation of the Engel vertical rotary press follows Donnelly’s purchase of a Toshiba 500-ton all-electric press and Universal Robots’ UR5 collaborative robot. The significant capital investments expand Donnelly’s capacity in injection molding and enhance its capabilities in value-added manufacturing services.
“By enhancing our capabilities with this new best-in-class machine, we continue to leverage technologies that ultimately help our customers succeed and lead with innovation,” said Jerry Bienias, Vice President of Operations.
