Digital manufacturing innovator Fictiv has further enhanced its injection molding services by launching automated design for manufacturability (DFM) capabilities that give customers free, instant feedback on the manufacturability of their parts.

Existing and new customers can access this feature immediately upon uploading their design files to receive a quote. Signing up for a Fictiv account is free.

Moldability issues identified

Customers upload CAD files for their injection molded parts and configure material, finish, and quantity parameters. The automated DFM feature identifies potential moldability issues by assessing critical aspects like part draft, thickness, and undercuts. Key design feedback includes:

  • Draft review: Color-coded analysis of draft angles and suggested adjustments for easier mold release.

  • Thickness review: Heat map highlights of potential wall issues, such as warping or sink marks.

  • Undercut analysis: Graphical review of undercuts requiring secondary tooling motions.

  • Parting line projection: Preliminary view of parting lines helps engineers plan for mold separation.

“It’s typical in the industry for injection molded parts to be reviewed for manufacturability after the quoting process, which can add weeks to the timeline,” explained Robbie Long, Fictiv’s product marketing manager for injection molding. “Following automated injection molding DFM, our technical experts then review the part designs and give additional feedback in as fast as two days.”

Cost-saving tool

Fictiv’s automated DFM for injection molding ultimately saves costs by shortening the cycle of revisions, testing and mold validation, and optimizing molding tool design.

"Our automated DFM for injection molding is a game-changer for engineers," said Fictiv CEO Dave Evans. "This innovation furthers our mission to make design feedback more accessible and seamless for (new and experienced) engineers worldwide."
