If you're trying to find a gift for the plastics professional who has everything, have you considered a vintage Mold-A-Rama machine?
If you’re of a certain age, you might remember these coin-operated wonders that mold souvenirs—often a plastic zoo animal or dinosaur—while you wait. For many children, it was an initiation into the world of plastic injection molding. A handful of machines are still in operation—I’m told there is one at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago and Third Man Records in Nashville, run by Jack White of White Stripes fame, has one (although it was predictably out of order when I was there). Moldville.com sells some vintage machines, but if you need to know how much they cost, this is probably not for you. The company welcomes inquiries by e-mail, but only if you are “seriously interested.”
