Macro Plastics installs two new Negri Bossi machines

Negri Bossi North America (New Castle, DE) announces that it has commissioned two Bi-Power injection molding machines at the Macro Plastics facility in Shelbyville, KY, to meet expanded polyethylene container production requirements. Headquartered in Fairfield, CA, with a global footprint, Macro Plastics is the world’s largest manufacturer of bulk plastic containers.

The 2200- and 3850-ton Bi-Power systems are paired with two Negri Bossi Sytrama 301G integrated Cartesian servo robots to ensure a seamless turnkey molding solution.

The two machine cells are the first to be installed at the Kentucky facility and represent a significant investment for Macro Plastics. According to Jeff Mitchell, Vice President of Operations, the company selected Negri Bossi for this project “because of our six-year satisfactory experience with their machines and robots at our Fairfield plant, and, in particular, because of the ease with which the equipment can be configured to meet our particular molding requirements.”

Bi-Power modular, two-platen clamp, hybrid-power injection molding machines are available in 1100- to 7700-ton models. The compact machines feature a robust twin-cylinder injection unit with generous tie-bar spacing and long ejector strokes. The moving platen rides on precision slide ways, and the company’s Hydroblock tie-bar locking system ensures reliability and rapid dry cycle times. The electric screw drive provides efficiency and energy savings and allows overlapping movements, resulting in faster cycle times.

Installation of the Bi-Power presses and Sytrama robots was completed in March 2016.
