Milacron's Maxima series sales rev up automotive molders

Tier 1 and 2 automotive molders are feeling the pressure from OEMs for more capacity, and Milacron Holdings Corp. is helping them meet that demand with its Maxima and Maxima G series large-tonnage machines. The servo-driven, multi-component machines have gained fast acceptance among the automotive industry's top molders when producing multicolor automotive lenses or other large automotive parts, Milacron claimed.

The Milacron automotive team recently completed the sale of a multi-machine order that includes Maxima Series 3 and 4 machines for complex automotive components. These customized systems represent a strong collaboration with the customer, resulting in highly engineered solutions using Milacron's deep understanding of the market and global engineering resources, noted a release from Milacron.

Automotive has long been a strong end market for Milacron, and the sale of these multi-component machines represents another in-road for Milacron's Maxima series, the company said.

"The excitement and response we've seen from our key customers in the automotive market has been impressive," said Ron Krisanda, COO - Advanced Plastic Processing Technologies. "Key customers are buying fleets of machines for their production lines and looking to Milacron to develop and integrate these systems."

While Milacron would not comment on the number of machines sold through the first half of 2015, the company said it was "significant."

Embracing the One Milacron mantra, Maxima series clamps are manufactured in Milacron's Afton, OH, plant, along with the complete system assembly. The parallel injection units on the Maxima multi-component systems are designed, engineered and manufactured in the Malterdingen, Germany plant. To further complement the machines, Mold-Masters' iM2 integrated hot-runner temperature controllers are often installed, noted the company's information.

"By utilizing the strengths of our manufacturing facilities globally, we can offer customers high-performance design with best-in-class lead times," explained Shawn Reilley, Milacron Injection VP and GM. "At times, Milacron is topping competitors' delivery dates by up to eight weeks. This global advantage has resonated with our customers," he explained.

Milacron's injection units are available in standard configurations or can be fully customized: For example, the injection unit can be designed to allow for multi-color and multi-component molding applications to produce automotive lenses and other complex applications. Milacron worked with the customer to design the machine and work cell, including supplying and integrating all of the auxiliary equipment and assisting in the layout of the facility.

Milacron noted that it enjoys a collaborative relationship with its customers that is ongoing throughout the lifecycle of the system. "Our industry-leading aftermarket service ensures our customers are taken care of for the life of their system," said Krisanda. "Our work doesn't end when the customer takes delivery of the machine. That's where we add value."

The Maxima series offers energy savings up to 60% over similar machines, said Milacron, and the machines are available in tonnages from 310 to 950 tons. The Maxima G series comes in tonnages ranging from 1100 to 6600 tons.
