Smith manufactures metal and ceramic components via metal injection molding (MIM) and ceramic injection molding (CIM). All of its molding is done at its Lindstrom, Minnesota facility, from where it supplies customers around the globe. Lori Bjork, general manager of Smith, said the new office in LA provides a physical presence to better serve and develop applications for the West Coast customer base. "Our customers continually tell us that having a technical engineer as the first point of contact really sets us apart from most companies. We like to be value added for our customer by being there and participating in the development process as early as possible. This office gives us another geographic point from which to easily be at our customers sites."
Brown, a 15-year veteran of Smith, will run the West Coast office. He brings a background in engineering and manufacturing within the plastics and metal molding industry. Brown said, "Smith organizes itself a bit differently from most organizations insomuch that all estimating and quoting is handled by the sales department. This gives our customers the benefit of immediate engineering and economic feedback to establish whether a component is viable for production by MIM. We believe that providing an instant technical resource is a primary driver of our sales growth."
